Knock Knock – Is There Any Booby Milk Today?

Welcome to your very own expert guide to gently reducing or compassionately ending your breastfeeding journey with a toddler or older child.

It doesn’t have to be difficult, and you don’t have to do it alone.

Hey mama, in case no-one’s told you recently, you’re doing a great job.

Yes, you, even if you’re feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and well-overdue a shower (or maybe that’s just me 🤔)

If you’re breastfeeding a toddler or older child, then without a doubt you have done amazingly well to get here.

And if it’s time to reduce feeds or end your breastfeeding journey then that’s ok.

Most people have a complex mix of thoughts and feelings around reducing or ending breastfeeding, I know I did.

I felt relief, regret, guilt and grief, alongside confusion about how best to go about it.

I couldn’t find what I needed, so I created it for myself, using my knowledge and skills as a child and family psychologist alongside trial and error of what worked for me and my daughter.

I made up a playful, psychologically-based approach that helped myself and my toddler navigate the path together, on the same team, keeping the connection and holding space for both my feelings and theirs.

Friends and family asked how we did it, so I started to share the approach. They were amazed how much it helped and said I needed to share it wider, so here it is, available for anyone who wants support on this complex journey.

About Dr Naomi Parsons

I’m a 40 something mum of 2 young girls and an experienced psychologist working with trauma, burnout, chronic illness, invisible disabilities and late-discovered neurodivergence.

I needed to end both of my daughter’s breastfeeding journeys around the age of 2/2.5, before either of us was really ready (for my eldest, I couldn’t sustain breastfeeding through a hyperemesis pregnancy and for my youngest I needed to go on medication that was incompatible with breastfeeding)

I experienced a huge range of emotions including guilt, relief and confusion about the best way to go about it

There was very little information available to support me and my children through the process and so I created my own approach, through trial and error, integrating my professional knowledge and my personal experience as a mum.

I managed to end both of my daughter’s breastfeeding journeys gently and compassionately (though of course I didn’t always get it right!)

Friends and colleagues started to ask how we did it, so I started to share and they said it was helpful.

Over time, I’ve developed the approach into a resource to share wider, so more parents and children can find the support they need
